Introduction To Ethics
Ethics is the study of moral value and obligation. One of the purposes of this class is to challenge your everyday presuppositions about morality. In this class, we discuss different conceptions of the “good life”, we will discuss and compare different moral theories such as utilitarianism, Kantianism, Aristotelianism, relativism, or moral individualism. We will talk about the role that free will or determinism plays in our moral integrity and moral responsibility. Then we will try to apply these theories to our everyday lives, as well as to political and social issues of our day. The goal is to improve your ability to articulate, critique, and defend moral beliefs. These are not only valuable tools to allow you to engage with other people more intelligently, but my hope is that you also become a better person in the process.
