What is the value of nature? Do we have moral obligations toward non-human animals or to the environment in which they live? Do we have a moral responsibility to people in another place and time, such as other nations or future generations? We will elaborate on debates between individual and collective, corporate or institutional, responsibility. We will discuss pros and cons of environmental policies and technological solutions. Later in the course we will explore the ways that environmental issues ripple into other areas of social justice such as: environmental racism, theories of eco-feminism, concerns of indigenous communities, and the entanglement of the political economy with our use of land and natural resources.
