Biomedical Ethics

This class analyzes and discusses ethical issues that arise within the realm of, medical care, medical policy, biomedical research and technology, and personal health decisions. We will start with an exploration of the definition of health and the role of a nurse, doctor, or researcher, then we will look at case studies from a wide range of situations. We discuss topics such as doctor-patient communication, human enhancement, disability, end of life decisions, animal testing, health care and wellness accessibility, health and marginalized communities, and mental health, among others. By the end of the class, students will be confident about engaging in discussions and defending positions (whether in speech or writing) regarding topics in bio-medical ethics and learn how to think critically about complex moral issues.
